Calculator guide

Describe the hand you need, not just the names of its cards

DrawState calculates everything in your browser, from a simple deck-and-target ratio to a sequence with mulligans, draws, searches, multiple goals, and resource costs.

A reliable first workflow

  1. 1. Establish a baseline in simple mode

Enter deck size, opening-hand size, target copies, and the minimum needed. With no effects or mulligan, DrawState uses an exact calculation with no sampling error.

  2. 2. Define goals by card or tag

Advanced mode can evaluate checked cards or selected tags. Choose AND when every goal is required and OR when any one of them is enough.

  3. 3. Add only the sequence you can actually play

Configure first-turn draws, mulligans, draw and search effects, and resource costs in play order. Rules and effects you do not enter are not included in the model.

  4. 4. Compare deck versions under identical conditions

Keep the success condition and target turn fixed, then change card counts. Simulation runs are reproducible when their settings, seed, and trial count are the same.

A simple example

Suppose a 40-card deck has three target copies and needs at least one in a five-card opening hand. With no effects or mulligan, the exact results are:

33.76% opening success · 30.11% chance of exactly one copy

How to read the result

  • An exact result is a mathematical probability for a simple condition; a simulation result is a sample-based estimate.
  • Read a simulation's seed, trial count, and 95% confidence interval together with its success rate.
  • Do not simply add searchers to the target count. Model whether a target remains in the deck and whether the search cost can be paid.
